Pearl Implants- So many systems – What’s the difference?

The variety of features offered in VOI’s pearl plating systems is vast but there are a few basic features that distinguish one from the other.

All pearl implants function as a locking buttress system for bone fixation but the way that the screws lock into the plates and the types of screws that each plate accepts differ.

Item codes simply with Pearl in the code (EX: Pearl 3.508) accept regular cortical screws. So a surgeon who chooses to use non- locking screws can still utilize a buttress method in surgery.

The profile of the screw recess of this plate is show here:

Cortical Pearl

Notice the threads are located at the bottom of the hole and are designed to accept the shaft threads of the cortical screw.

This is an attractive option for surgeons who choose not to use a locking head screw but want to use a buttress system.

It’s also worth noting that another benefit of this cortical system is that VOI offers options for type of screw head and both types mate with these plates.

The other option for pearl systems is a locking plate. These include a hole that accepts a locking head screw. The item code will include a DT Pearl or L Pearl or NJ Pearl in the item code (EX: L Pearl 3.512)

Profiles of the holes of these plates can be seen below:
